Passive House Co-Housing Project.

6-storey residential building, 2024

Located in Peterborough, Ontario this project is a 6-storey co-housing project aimed to create a community that engages with each other through shared meals and other activities. This project is aiming for Passive House standards as well as possible CMHC funding.

The site is an old commune garden, which has a difference of over 8 meters difference between the north-east corner and south-west corner of the site. There is a tall, historic hedge in front of the building that the client wants to maintain to help preserve the feel of the street for the community and provide separation and privacy from neighbours.

The program of the space is split between two typologies. The main floor which contains primarily common space. These spaces include a kitchen and great hall, workout area, a workshop and a games room. Bike storage is also located on this floor. The other typology is the 5 unit floors above which have been arranged so that there is a selection of rooms that are either single loaded or double loaded. 5 out of 8 of the rooms on each floor are designed for accessibility. There is a central node both inside and outside for people to gather on each floor and a common patio at ground level. There is a garden for the occupants to grow food to use in the kitchen adjacent.
